China & Hong Kong Design Tour
21 days and 19 nights  •  October / November 2002


Day 1 & 2
  • Depart United States on an evening flight across the international dateline.
Day 3
  • Upon our Beijing arrival, our English speaking guide escorts us to the Grand Hyatt Hotel.  A tour of the recently built hotel is available to the group Welcome reception and dinner at the hotel.

Day 4
  • Our day's activities include a tour of the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, an area rarely frequented by the average traveler.  Following lunch at the Capital Garden Restaurant, we visit the Temple of Heaven.  Dinner at the well known Li Family Restaurant.
Day 5
  • Our full day tour begins with a visit to Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, where we hope to gain permission to view hidden back rooms of the palace, and a tour of the Porcelain Museum.  Following a lunch at the Green Tianshi Vegetarian Restaurant, we visit the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Beijing University, and the Summer Palace. Peking Duck dinner at Quanjude Restaurant.

Day 6
  • Join us for visits to a furniture factory and the Ming and Qing Dynasty Furniture Exhibition.  After a Sichuan style lunch at the Gongwangfu Palace Restaurant, see the Madame Song Residence and a textile factory.  Dinner is truly special at the historical China Club, a 16th century palace, marking our last night in Beijing.
Day 7
  • Prepare for our morning flight from Beijing to Xian.  Upon arrival in Xian, we will dine at the Xi Qi International Hotel.  Check in at the Hyatt Regency, then a private tour of the Han Yang Tombs.  Dumpling dinner at the De Fa Chang Restaurant.

Day 8
  • Come see the world famous Terra Cotta Warriors Museum.  Lunch at the Friendship Restaurant, then join our tour of the Shaanxi Provincial Museum and view their subterranean frescoes.  Visit an antiques market.  Dinner and cultural show at the Tang Dynasty Theatre.
Day 9
  • Prepare for a morning flight from Xian to Chongqing.  Upon arrival in Chongqing, we will dine at the Yangtze Club Chongqing.  During the afternoon, visit the Ci Qi Kou, the Ancient Town, and the Stillwell Museum and the People Square.  Buffet dinner at Harbour Plaza Hotel Chongqing before we arrive at the pierto board Victoria Cruises.  Overnight on board the ship prior to sailing on the Yangtze River.

Day 10 - 12
  • Days of ease and comfort on Victoria Cruises as we depart Chongqing for our 840 mile cruise of the Yangtze River.  This is the LAST CHANCE to see some of the future lost treasures of the Yangtze.  On our first sailing night, there is a Captain's Welcome Reception and Crew Show.  Shore excursions, meals and entertainment are included.  On Wednesday night, there is a Farewell Reception and Evening Show.

Day 13
  • After lunch aboard our cruise ship, we disembark as we arrive in Wuhan.  Enjoy an afternoon visit to the Hubei Provincial Museum and a Charm Bell performance.  Late afternoon flight to Shanghai where we check into the spectacular Grand Hyatt Hotel, with its panoramic views of this glorious city.  Dinner is on your own this evening.
Day 14
  • In the morning, Henry Hong, a specialist trained in architectural history and design will lead our group on a unique architectural tour of Shanghai.  Included are visits to the Bund, Marble Hall, Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, and the former Moller House.  Following lunch at the Peace Grill, tour the exciting and new Shanghai Museum.  Stroll through the center of Old Town and enjoy dinner at the Shanghai Classical Restaurant.

Day 15
  • A full day trip out of Shanghai to the scenic village of Suzhou.  With its quaint canals, Suzhou is home to the Humble Administrator Garden, and the Lion Rock Garden.  We will tour a silk factory.  Buffet lunch at the Sheraton Suzhou Hotel.  Back to Shanghai by early evening, where dinner is on your own.
Day 16
  • Travel from Shanghai to Zhou, a picturesque water village.  Your afternoon is free back in Shanghai.  Join us for tea at the home of a close friend of the Kaufman family.  Dinner is open.

Day 17
  • Tour for the day and visit the Jade Buddha Temple, the Oriental Pearl Tower, a Shanghai landmark, where we will have lunch.  We will spend the afternoon at the Shanghai Porcelain Art Center, and an antique warehouse, Hongqiao Old Furniture Exhibition.  We will also visit the Shuguang Hospital and the Institute of Shanghai.  Dinner is at the trendy M on the Bund.
Day 18
  • Prepare for a morning flight as we leave Shanghai for Hong Kong.  As we travel from Hong Kong's new airport, we stop for the breathtaking views from Tsing Ma Bridge Lookout.  Continue on to the award winning Mandarin Oriental Hotel, considered one of the finest hotels in the world.  Dinner is on your own.

Day 19
  • Morning visits to Victoria Peak, a sampan ride at Aberdeen, the Tea ware House Museum, at Hong Kong Park, and a shopping expedition at Stanley Market.  Lunch at the Verandah Restaurant in Repulse Bay.  The remainder of your afternoon is free.  Dinner is on your own.
Day 20
  • A day of leisure to explore the incredible city of Hong Kong.  A farewell dinner with our design tour group will be held at the Spring Deer Restaurant.  Be adventurous! For a few cents, transfer from Hong Kong Island to the Kowloon side by the Star Ferry or MTR, Hong Kong's subway system to get to and from the restaurant.
Day 21
  • Day of departure for our return flights to the United States.
